Character matters : central office administrators' perceptions of character education

| dc.description.abstract | In recent years there has been increasing pressure all across North America for schools to focus more on character education. This study examines one District's response to character education through the implementation of the Community of Caring Program in the District. The results of the study provide insights into the program through the perceptions of central office administrators. Respondents explain in detail why there was a need for such a program, how character education was implemented throughout the District, what the overall effects of the program have been on student character development, school culture and climate, and future directions for character education within the District. The overall effectiveness of the character education program, Community of Caring, was assessed through the analysis of quantitative and qualitative data collected from interviews with central office administrators. The results of the study indicate that there was almost unanimous support for the inclusion and continuation of character education in the District. Community of Caring was found to have positive effects on the climate, culture, and character development of the students in the District's schools. | en |
