dc.description.abstractThis project - "Retraining the University Trained Teacher" - explores teacher stories, from my colleagues teaching in Northland School Division, and from my own experiences, to assist new teachers in Northland School in making those critical connections with the students in their classrooms that allow teaching and learning to follow. The following questions are asked: If a teacher chooses to work in a community he or she is not familiar with, how may this teacher become more effective, be made more welcomed, and be more successful? What stories can be shared that would explain the moments of understanding that take place between the teachers and the students they teach? How can a teacher become a learner in his or her classroom and community? Teaching stories from five Northland teachers and I are presented and analyzed. The document implicitly and explicitly discusses the importance of making connections with students, learning from experiences, and understanding the roles we played as individual teachers in the management of our classes. Stories were chosen to underline the importance of this to new teachers. The project considers the teacher as learner in his or her own classroom; understanding and using the values and expertise the students bring with them in helping this teacher to become more effective.en
