The growing percentage of older Canadians presents challenges for health care providers in assisted living facilities (ALFs). Health care aides (HCAs) provide vital support and care to individuals who live in such facilities. Immense pressure is placed on the HCAs. Stress derives from many facets of one’s life; however, work-related stress is increasingly prominent. The purpose of this descriptive, exploratory, qualitative thesis is to describe, understand, and explore the experience of work-related stress among HCAs in ALFs. Semi-structured face to face interviews with 14 participants were conducted. Four main themes emerged from the research: (a) the meaning of work-related stress; (b) genesis of work-related stress; (c) how stress affects/changes workers’ lives; and (d) how HCAs cope. Research findings from this study will enable employers and service providers to identify stressors in the workplace, reduce work stress, and improve individual well-being. Further, I identified what the ideal workplace from an HCA’s view.en_US
