Abstract
Arguably one of the greatest cartographers in Canadian history, David
Thompson has been widely praised for his contributions to the study of
geography. Though less acclaimed, his interaction with the Natives of the
Canadian West has been equally significant, contributing to a greater
historical understanding of the Native peoples of North America. In
examining his understanding of the Native people he encountered and his
desire to learn about their heritage, one is presented with a picture of the
respect Thompson held towards the aboriginals and the awareness of their
distinct culture. In relating to Western Natives, Thompson exemplifies the
understanding which is so desperately needed in the realm of present day
political discourse between government and aboriginal leaders.
